Industry Veteran Greg Schulz of StorageIO Reveals Leading-Edge Green IT Strategies in “The Green and Virtual Data Center” Book

StorageIO Founder Greg Schulz Launches the Definitive Book for Enabling Virtualized, Efficient and Cost-Effective Green IT Computing Environments

Stillwater, Minn.– January 27, 2009  – The StorageIO Group (www.storageio.com), a leading independent IT industry analyst and consultancy firm, in conjunction with publisher Auerbach Publications/CRC Press, today announced the release of “The Green and Virtual Data Center,” a new book by noted author and StorageIO founder Greg Schulz. The book focuses on the idea that IT infrastructure resources configured and deployed in a highly virtualized manner can be combined with other techniques and technologies to achieve a simplified and cost-effective delivery of IT services in a clean, green, and profitable manner. StorageIO is also announcing the launch of www.thegreenandvirtualdatacenter.com, a new micro website landing page providing information for enabling and deploying eco-friendly next-generation data centers.

“The Green and Virtual Data Center” sets aside the political aspects of what is or is not considered green to examine the opportunities for organizations trying to grow their business while being environmentally friendly in an economically efficient manner. Addressing multiple technology domains and disciplines, it looks at design and implementation tradeoffs using various best practices and technologies to sustain application and business growth while maximizing resources, such as power, cooling, floor space, storage, server performance, and network capacity.

Throughout the book’s pages, savvy industry veteran Greg Schulz provides real-world insight while addressing best practices, as well as server, software, storage, networking, and facilities issues that current or next-generation virtual data centers are facing today.

Some of the topics include:

  • Energy and data footprint reductions
  • Cloud-based storage and computing
  • Intelligent and adaptive power management
  • Server, storage, and networking virtualization
  • Tiered servers for storage, network, and data centers
  • Energy avoidance and energy efficiency

“In his new book, Greg Schulz presents a concise and visionary perspective on the green issues. He cuts through the hype and explains where to start and what the options are for organizations looking to get more out of their existing resources,” said Greg Brunton of EDS, an HP company. “I find ‘The Green and Virtual Data Center’ to be a great place to start your green journey and a useful handbook to have as the journey continues.”

“Many technologies already exist today while others are emerging, allowing a green and efficient virtual data center to sustain business growth with reasonable return on investment,” said Schulz. “This book presents virtually all critical data center technologies and techniques, as well as the interdependencies that need to be supported to enable a dynamic, energy-efficient, economical, and green IT data center.”

The Green and Virtual Data Center has 376 pages, with more than 100 figures and tables, 11 chapters plus appendices, as well as a glossary. ISBN-10: 1420086669, ISBN-13: 978-1420086669, publication of January 2009. Books can be purchased now at AmazonBarnes & Noble, Borders, CRCPress.com and other venues around the world at an MSRP of US$79.95.

This Book Is About

The Green and Virtual Data Center (Auerbach) sets aside the political aspects of what is or is not considered green, to instead examine the opportunities for organizations that want to sustain economical growth that is environmental-friendly. It is based on the principle that IT infrastructure resources configured and deployed in a highly virtualized manner can be combined with other techniques and technologies to achieve simplified and cost-effective delivery of IT services in a clean green profitable manner. Many technologies exist now, and others are emerging, that can enable a green and efficient virtual data center to support and sustain business growth with reasonable return on investment. This book presents virtually all critical IT technologies and techniques, examining the interdependencies that need to be supported to enable a dynamic, energy-efficient, economical, and environmental-friendly green IT data center. Inside The Book You Will Find

A green and virtual data center relies on the efficient usage of underlying physical resources to achieve energy savings. Green servers, storage, and networks deliver the performance, availability, and responsiveness for all types of application needs and requirements.

This book provides strategies and blueprints for enabling and deploying environmentally friendly next-generation data centers. Addressing multiple technology domains and disciplines, it looks at design and implementation tradeoffs using various best practices and technologies to sustain application and business growth while maximizing resources, such as power, cooling, floor space, storage, server performance, and network capacity.

In this book, coverage shows how to make server and storage virtualization energy efficient and still be able to support a diversity of high-performance applications without degrading application quality of service or service level commitments. “The Green and Virtual Data Center” book also explores performance and capacity planning in a virtual environment that supports resource-demanding applications, such as OLTP and streaming media.

From Greg Brunton – EDS/An HP Company”
“Greg Schulz has presented a concise and visionary perspective on the Green issues, He has cut through the hype and highlighted where to start and what the options are. A great place to start your green journey and a useful handbook to have as the journey continues. – ”From Rick Bauer – Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) – Education and Technology Director”
“Greg is one of the smartest “good guys” in the storage industry. He has been a voice of calm amid all the “green IT hype” over the past few years. So when he speaks of the possible improvements that Green Tech can bring, it’s a much more realistic approach…”From CMG (Computer Measurement Group) MeasureIT
I must admit that I have been slightly skeptical at times, when it comes to what the true value is behind all of the discussions on “green” technologies in the data center. As someone who has seen both the end user and vendor side of things, I think my skepticism gets heightened more than it normally would be. This book really helped dispel my skepticism. The book is extremely well organized and easy to follow. Each chapter has a very good introduction and comprehensive summary. This book could easily serve as a blueprint for organizations to follow when they look for ideas on how to design new data centers. It’s a great addition to an IT Bookshelf. – Reviewed by Stephen R. From Tom Becchetti – IT Architect
“This book is packed full of information. From ecological and energy efficiencies, to virtualization strategies and what the future may hold for many of the key enabling technologies. Greg’s writing style benefits both technologists and management levels.”MSP Business Journal: Greg Schulz named an Eco-Tech Warrior – April 2009

From David Marshall at VMblog.com: If you follow me on Linkedin, you might have seen that I had been reading a new book that came out at the beginning of the year titled, “The Green and Virtual Data Center” by Greg Schulz. Rather than writing about a specific virtualization platform and how to get it up and running, Schulz takes an interesting approach at stepping back and looking at the big picture. After reading the book, I reached out to the author to ask him a few more questions and to share his thoughts with readers of VMBlog.com. I know I’m not Oprah’s Book Club, but I think everyone here will enjoy this book. Click here to read more.
