Welcome to the 2011 spring edition of the Server and StorageIO Group (StorageIO) newsletter. For those who missed the winter 2011 edition, you can find it and other previous editions here. As with previous editions, this StorageIO news letter contains links to various blog posts, videos, audio, interviews and commentary on IT industry technologies trends and related topics.
The past couple of months have been busy with various projects, research, attending as well as presenting at different events in addition to covering industry activity. Also during the past couple of months time was spent doing some blog posts (see below) along with wrapping up my new book Cloud and Virtual Data Storage Networking (CRC).
Industry activity over the past few months included NetApp announcing plans to acquire the LSI external storage business unit (Engenio) that I discuss in this blog post. Other industry news includes HGST selling its disk drive business to Western Digital (WD) with Seagate and Samsung also doing a deal. Here is a link to a recent interview that I did as part of the countdown to StorageExpo series and a link to the 90th episode of InfoSmack that I was a guest on. There have also been some industry storm clouds involving loss of availability or accessibility to some service providers discussed here. Meanwhile Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) continues to find its legs making good strides from a technology as well as ecosystem maturity standpoint, see some comments here. What about Green IT? Here is a post I did here with some thoughts and perspective of how the New Green IT is about efficiency, effectiveness, working smarter and being more productive to support business concerns.
Speaking of IT Clouds, StorageIO is now a member of the Open Data Center Alliance. The Alliance is led by a Steering Committee of global IT leaders (BMW, China Life, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, Lockheed Martin, Marriott International, Inc., National Australia Bank, Shell, Terremark and UBS). The steering committee was joined by 60 additional companies at Alliance inception. StorageIO has become a member of the Open Data Center Alliance and encourages others to check them out.
 |
The Open Data Center Alliance is comprised of leading global IT managers who are working together to define and promote data center requirements for the cloud and beyond. |
Hope you are doing well, look forward to sharing more with you soon as well as catching up at one of the many upcoming live in person or virtual events. Enjoy this edition of the StorageIO newsletter and I look forward to your continued comments and discussions.
Cheers gs
